Horse Eventing is a horse competition where horse and rider compete in several disciplines of riding. It can be compared to a triathlon as it consists of cross-country, dressage and show-jumping in a single competition. The first phase of a three day event is dressage. The aim of dressage is to demonstrate that a fit horse capable of completing the cross country phase is also able to perform dressage which requires a precise and relaxed manner from horse and rider.

Show hunters and jumpers should be extremely well turned-out. Their coat should gleam with good care, and they carry a bit more weight than an event or racehorse. The horse is always bathed before the competition, with special attention paid to the white markings. The hooves are polished before the horse enters the show ring.

The next phase of horse eventing, cross-country, requires both horse and rider to be in excellent shape and to be brave and trusting of each other. This phase consists of approximately 12-20 fences (lower levels), 30-40 at the higher levels, placed on a long outdoor circuit. These fences consist of very solidly built natural objects (telephone poles, stone walls, etc.) as well as various obstacles such as ponds and streams, ditches, drops and banks, and combinations involving several jumping efforts - based on objects that would commonly occur in the countryside.

Give the horse some slack, but you have to stay in control. As little as 30cm will be fine for maximum control, provided you’re not hanging off the rope. Walk on the left side, at the horse’s shoulder, or very slightly forward of the shoulder. Horse riding must be done and should be handles in a proper way
